Lumens are one-of-a-kind contact photographs. Made with material laid directly on photo paper and pressed under glass, they are exposed to light for 1 to 8 hours, or even days. Prints are then fixed and washed to archival standards. No developer is used. No camera is used. Selected plants are layered together to make an expression of the landscape. Resin-coated paper produces monochromatic images. A variety of blue, pink and gold colors are achieved on fiber paper.
I began working with lumens photograms while leading nature walks in Black Mountain, NC in May 2016. At Salem College, NC, I demonstrated lumens for a photography class during the exhibition "From These Mountains: Black Mountain School, 2016" on view from February 10-March 24, 2017. On April 6, 2017, I did an all-day lumens workshop and nature walk on Folly Beach. In November 2016, I was artist-in-residence on Spring Island, SC. On March 5-6, 2018 I taught a 2-day workshop on Spring Island, SC. Images of additional work available by request.
